Botox

What is Botox?

While Botox is actually a brand name, most often the term refers to the injections of botulinum toxin that cause the temporary paralysis of a muscle. Botox can be used to treat a variety of conditions like excessive sweating, neck spasms, and migraines, but the most common use is to reduce and prevent the signs of aging.

Small amounts of Botox are injected into the skin and muscles in your face and neck to relax the muscles and smooth lines, such as forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. The effects of Botox are temporary and generally last from three to four months.

At Dermatology of Southeastern Ohio, our team of highly-trained providers have years of experience administering Botox and deeply understand facial anatomy to deliver beautiful results. QUESTIONS

Botox FAQs

Botox has become increasingly popular over the years. If you are considering this anti-aging treatment, you likely have a few questions or concerns about it. Explore our FAQs section below to learn more about Botox, including how Botox works, its benefits and side effects, and what type of wrinkles we treat with Botox at our dermatology clinic in Zanesville, Ohio.

Botox has many advantages over other anti-aging treatments. The injection procedure is minimally-invasive, completed in under ten minutes, and requires zero downtime. The full results of the treatment are quick to show and can be customized to fit your needs and budget. Another benefit is that the results are temporary, so if you decide Botox isn’t right for you the paralysis effect will fade in three to six months.

Botox is a neuromodulator, meaning it inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses. When it is injected beneath your facial muscles it acts as a paralytic by stopping the impulses within the muscle fibers to twitch. When these muscles are frozen the skin on top of them lays smoother, giving the appearance of softer, more youthful-looking skin.

Additional, further creasing and wrinkling is prevented when the muscle movement is stopped. This is ideal for those interested in preventive Botox.

Although the toxin that Botox uses can be deadly in large quantities, this cosmetic procedure only uses a tiny amount, making it a very safe treatment. Botox has been used safely for decades as a successful anti-aging treatment and there has never been any death or life threatening effects caused by the injections.

Because the dose used in treatments is so low the chance you’ll experience any negative effects is very small. Furthermore, choosing an experienced provider, such as the board-certified providers at Dermatology of Southeastern Ohio, to perform the procedure will increase the safety and reduce the likelihood of side effects.

Possible side effects of Botox include pain, swelling, and redness around the injection site, drooping eyelid or eyebrow, crooked smile, headaches, and flu-like symptoms.

There is a very small risk for some more serious side effects to occur if the toxin spreads to the rest of your body. This can include muscle weakness, breathing problems, trouble speaking, impaired vision, and loss of bladder control. This is rare.

However, it’s important to note that the likelihood of you experiencing these side effects are very small, especially when you choose an experienced injector, like ours at Dermatology of Southeastern Ohio. Though, if you get Botox and you experience any of these symptoms shortly afterwards, call your doctor immediately.

Botox is most effective on wrinkles caused by movement of your muscles, called dynamic wrinkles. Examples of dynamic wrinkles include smile or frown lines, crows feet, and the ‘11’ lines that can form between your brows.

The results from your Botox treatment will vary depending on the amount of Botox used and how quickly your body metabolizes it. Generally, Botox results last anywhere between three and six months.

Many people find that the results from the first treatment tend to not last as long as the results after repeated treatments, which is why we recommend routine follow-up appointments.

Baby Botox is the same procedure as regular Botox, but with a much smaller dose. You may opt for baby Botox if you:

  • Don’t have deep set wrinkles and want to prevent signs of aging
  • Are interested in avoiding a frozen Botox face
  • Are nervous and want to try a smaller dose for your first Botox treatment
  • Want a lower cost procedure.

Results from baby Botox typically are quicker to fade, lasting up to three months. However, when used regularly, baby Botox can be an ideal way to slow down or even prevent the development of wrinkles and fine lines. Contact us today to schedule your baby Botox in Zanesville, Ohio.

In most cases, Botox treatments are not covered by insurance, as they are deemed a non-essential elective procedure. However, some plans are more inclusive than others. Contact your specific insurance provider to see if Botox treatments are included in your healthcare plan.
